Maybe one of the best parts about tracking down beauty products made in America is that many of them are chemical-free.

DressGreen on Etsy leaves out the bad parts: petroleum products, parabens, phthalates, silicone and sulfates.

Not only are the soaps, scrubs, creams and salves all-natural, like everything on Etsy, they’re made from scratch.

Very excited to stumble across this line of skin care for men. Oh yeah, you think, real men don’t use that stuff. But let me be the first to tell you it was developed by a auto mechanic for other manly men who wreck their bodies during a day’s work.

Not only is Sam’s Natural all natural, it’s also all made in America. The company also buys ingredients from American vendors. So there’s that.

Plus, the brand new company (launched July 2011) has done such a good job of branding for men, we’re sure they’ll soar to the top of the skin care heap in no time.

“Bring me back something French!” was one of my favorite lines in the movie Home Alone.

These couture soaps look French-like, but aren’t. Made in New Jersey, Gianna Rose Atelier crafts triple-milled (French milled) gift and spa soaps that are creamy, vegetable based and lightly scented. And their gift wraps and boxes are to die-for.

Post image for Finding out: Is Burt’s Bees made in America?

It seems they are, after all, Burt Shavitz living in a chicken coop and selling honey off the back of his truck, and Roxanne Quimby living in a tent with three kids, meet, make out, then make candles and lip balm is how the company started in Maine.

Today they are in North Carolina and owned by the Clorox Company. So we thought we’d drop them a line to find out for sure. Standby for response.

Update: Consumer Response Representative Leigh Mize says yes, 70-percent of their products are made in their plant in North Carolina. The remaining 30-percent are farmed out to other American manufacturers. Yay!

Everybody loves the company story that started on the kitchen table. Tom’s of Maine actually began in the blender with Kate Chappell, wife of Tom mixing up a batch of natural toothpaste.

And even though the business has grown to commercial size with a recent sale to Colgate-Palmolive, the Chappels still run the company. Based in Maine, Tom’s expands their line to deodorant, floss, mouthwash and soap — keeping it all home.
